The frivolous spirit of the world is indeed hardly entitled to the name of any thing allied with pride, which has a diabolic grandeur of its own. Here the trick produces a resemblance to oriental fatuity, so that a poet, comparing one of its experts, sa is, 3 " Just as a mandarin finds nothing fine, At least his manner suffers not to guess That any thing he views can greatly please; Perhaps we have borrow'd this from the Chinese."
